Tooth grinding causes many dental problems if you're part of the 25 percent of the population that experiences it. Most people with bruxism (tooth gnashing) don't exhibit any immediate symptoms but show wear on their teeth and gum line that indicates the problem. Only 5 percent display painful symptoms, which vary from extreme headaches to ear, tooth or jaw pain. Many dentists recommend night guards for teeth grinding.
If you grind your teeth in the night, you may wake up with painful teeth or jaws. If there is no pain to alert you, your spouse may tell you that you grind because the noise keeps her awake or your dentist may notice signs during a dental exam.

Dr. Donnelly can perform a variety of procedures using laser technology, such as a frenectomy, osseous surgery, and gum grafting. Dr. Donnelly is also able to use laser technology as a way to regenerate healthy gums and remove diseases areas in a virtually painless way. This method also encourages healthy gum to regenerate and attach to the teeth. There is a much lower chance of gum disease returning when laser therapy is used as opposed to traditional surgery.
Dr. Donnelly is a leader in the dental profession providing general and esthetic dental care for patients in San Diego since 1979. Since his training at the University of Southern California Dental School he has continued his education with advanced studies and mini-residencies keeping our office on the cutting edge of dental technologies, including CEREC cad-cam, one-visit crowns, Invisalign braces, Laser gum treatment, mini-implant placement, implant restoration, cosmetic dentures, and preventative periodontal treatment. Active in the San Diego County Dental Society, he is a past president, past Trustee to the California Dental Association, and award winning Editor. He founded the Old Town State Historic Park Dental Museum and contributed to the dental museum in the Marine Battalion Headquarters. He established the Dental Clinic for Father Joe at St. Vincent de Paul Center downtown, taking it from one chair in the old barber shop to its current state of the art 4 operatory clinic location in the Mabile Center.
Dr. Donnelly, originally from Sacramento, made San Diego his home after Dental School at USC. Dr. Donnelly's skilled dental hands have a tender touch. He feels that putting the patient's needs, concerns, and comfort first is always the first priority.
